Information for 2020-21 Back to School: Update 8.5.20
Dear OSSB and OSD Communities:
The Columbus Public Health Department (CPH) and the Franklin County
Health Department (FCHD) have issued specific recommendations due
to the large number of positive cases of COVID-19 in our area of the state
that unfortunately have a direct impact on our school plans for the fall. OSSB and OSD are located in the jurisdiction of CPH and as residential facilities, we must carefully plan for the safety of students and staff.
The revised fall 2020 plans for OSSB and OSD include:
· August 17th - staff return
· September 8th - students start school (all virtual learning for the first quarter)
On or about October 1st, evaluation of current conditions
· October 13 - staff return (all on campus)
· October 26, students return (all on campus)
This has been a very difficult decision. We want our schools open for students on campus but the current risk level is too great. We further understand the burden this puts on parents with childcare and supporting students' online learning experience. We wanted to share this information early to give parents a month to plan arrangements for this time period.
There are a number of plans in the works to help make the online learning experience the best it can be for students and families that will be shared soon. Dr. Al LaBarre (OSD) and Michelle Wagner (OSSB) are the lead administrators who will be able to answer questions specific to our remote learning plan. Our social emotional learning team, led by Jason Franklin, will also be available to support families. Email addresses for these individuals are:
Although we all would prefer to have students on campus to start the school year, we are excited for the new year to begin. We look forward to seeing everyone online to start and very soon back on campus. Please submit your questions to and we will get right back to you with an answer as quickly as possible.
Lou Maynus, Superintendent
The below chart shows our attendance models that will be used when we can return to campus. Which model OSD will be under will be based on Franklin County risk level.
The current 2020-21 school calendar is subject to any Orders or guidance by Governor DeWine, Ohio Department of Health, Franklin County Public Health or Columbus Public Health. Regardless of in-person or virtual learning, school will begin September 8. More information coming soon.
